YOUTH MONTH 2026!
As the curtains comes down on Youth Month, another successful edition of the Mathews Mpete Cup drew thousands of attendees at the Ga-Rankuwa View Clinic Grounds to commemorate the historic 1976 youth uprising in sport on 13-16 June 2026, the sixth edition of the cup that transformed the venue into a vibrant celebration of youth, unity and sporting excellence.
The three-day extravaganza featured football, netball, road running and aerobics activities, attracting participants and spectators from across Ga-Rankuwa and neighbouring communities who vowed that they are looking forward to returning in 2027.
CHAMPIONS CROWNED ON YOUTH DAY!
Rising Stars won the Under-15 men’s division with a 3-2 victory over Kota Sports Academy, then Batau FC Ladies shocked Masakeng Highlanders 2-0 to take home the women’s laurels, and Batau FC men’s side walked away with the Under-19 trophy with a 2-0 win over Flying Hawks.
Families, former players, local businesses and community leaders turned out in large numbers, creating an electric atmosphere synonymous with township sporting culture.
The tournament has enjoyed sustained backing from Net Nine Nine, which has sponsored the competition since its inception six years ago.
The fibre internet service provider views the tournament as part of its broader commitment to investing in township communities where it has rolled out fibre optic infrastructure.
A WELL ORGANISED EVENT FOR THE PEOPLE!
The overwhelming public response to the event reflected Net Nine Nine’s vision of supporting meaningful community initiatives beyond connectivity, using sport as a vehicle for social cohesion and youth development.
The Mathews Mpete Foundation, through senior manager, Siphiwe Manyike, secured a Joint Operations Committee (JOC) certificate from the City of Tshwane, ensuring that all safety, emergency and event management protocols were met.
Event founder Mathews Mpete expressed gratitude to the community, sponsors and stakeholders who have contributed to the tournament’s success.
“What started as a modest initiative aimed at keeping young people engaged during Youth Month has grown into one of the most anticipated sporting festivals in our community,” said Mpete.
“Seeing thousands of people gathering peacefully to honour the legacy of June 16 through sport is truly humbling. We appreciate the unwavering support from Net Nine Nine, Hollywoodbets, our volunteers, clubs, and residents who continue to make this tournament bigger and better each year. This event belongs to the people of Ga-Rankuwa, and together we are proving that township sport can be organised professionally and sustainably.”
ENDORSEMENT FROM CITY OF TSHWANE!
The tournament’s stature has also attracted recognition from the City of Tshwane.
The City’s endorsement was reaffirmed by MMC for Community and Social Development Services, Councillor Palesa Modise, who acknowledged the positive impact the competition has on youth empowerment and social development.
Modise noted that the municipality recognises the Mathews Mpete Cup as a significant community sporting programme that aligns with the City’s objectives of promoting active lifestyles, social inclusion and opportunities for young people.
