YOUNG KINGS IN CHECK
The 2026 Moja Chess Extravaganza concluded in spectacular fashion at the Bellville Velodrome in Cape Town, delivering six days of world-class chess competition while shining a spotlight on youth development through the game.
Bringing together 475 players from 11 countries, the prestigious tournament once again established itself as one of the leading chess events on the African continent.
Hosted by Moja Chess Solutions in partnership with the Western Cape Chess Association and the Cape Town Chess Federation, the event attracted players from countries including South Africa, Malawi, Mozambique, Libya and Ukraine.
A major highlight of this year’s tournament was the strong involvement of telecommunications company Net Nine Nine, whose sponsorship and hands-on support played a significant role in the success of the junior divisions.
Net99 proudly sponsored the fiercely contested U-10 section, which showcased exceptional young chess talent and thrilling matches throughout the tournament.

BREAKING LIMITS, BUILDING LEGENDS!
The company further strengthened its commitment to youth development by also adopting the U-8 section and providing additional gift prizes for young players, creating memorable experiences for the children participating in the event.
The Net99 U-10 section produced outstanding performances, with Akemdien Alex emerging victorious ahead of Rehse Nathan and Sahoo Shaurya.
In the Net99-supported U-8 Section, Mokefane Morena claimed top honours, followed by De Wet Evan and Brand Ethan.
Tournament organisers praised Net99 for its meaningful investment in grassroots chess development and for helping create opportunities for young players to compete on a professional platform.
The sponsorship reinforced the company’s growing involvement in community upliftment and youth empowerment initiatives across South Africa.
The tournament’s Prestige Section was won by FM Joseph Mwale of Malawi, who completed the competition unbeaten to secure the title for the second time in his career.
IM Jan Karsten finished second, while IM Bwalya Gillian claimed third place.
The South African chess star WIM Jesse Nikki February dominated the Ladies Section, capturing the title for the third time and further cementing her reputation as one of the country’s top female players.

MOJA CHESS BRINGS SOLUTION TO SA!
The Edu-Chess sponsored U-12 section also delivered exciting action, while Edu-Chess contributed significantly to the tournament by supplying chess boards and sets used throughout the event.
Beyond the competition itself, the Moja Chess Extravaganza once again demonstrated the power of chess to unite people across cultures, generations and borders while building the next generation of African chess talent.
Another standout feature of the 2026 edition was the introduction of the Seniors Section, which was warmly received and added a fresh dynamic to the competition.
The event was officiated by Chief Arbiter IA Ben de Winnaar, supported by a team of 12 arbiters and a Fair Play division led by Carol Lefyedi.
Moja Chess Solutions extended heartfelt appreciation to all sponsors and partners, with special recognition given to Net99 for its exceptional contribution to youth chess and its active involvement throughout the tournament.
