Fibre Upskilling Program
In 2024, Net Nine Nine proudly launched the pilot phase of its Fibre Upskilling Programme in Kagiso, near Krugersdorp, at Mandisa Shiceka High School. This initiative was designed to educate and empower learners by providing both theoretical knowledge and practical skills in the fibre internet industry.
The programme consisted of structured sessions covering the fundamentals of fibre infrastructure, its operation, and the transformative impact it can have in communities like Kagiso. The curriculum was made possible through a collaboration with Net Nine Nine’s supplier, Cable Feeder Systems (CFS), and local build contractor KC Pinnacle, who helped compile course material, provide trainers, and deliver engaging presentations.
The programme received overwhelming support from both students and educators at Mandisa Shiceka. Over 600 applications were received, from which 180 learners were selected to participate. Each session concluded with a quiz, designed to identify the most dedicated and capable students to progress to the next stage.
At the start of the 2025 academic year, the top 25 students were awarded Certificates of Excellence, making them eligible for internship placement at KC Pinnacle after completing matric. In addition, two outstanding students – Mzukhona Malcon Makhute and Dineo Molefe – achieved the highest scores across both the theoretical and practical components of the course.
As a reward, they each received a fully funded fibre splicing course in Centurion, covering all costs including transport, accommodation, and meals – a package valued at R50 000 per student. In May 2025, Dineo and Malcon became the youngest students ever to complete the course in South Africa, according to COFI Training representatives. Trainers praised their engagement, discipline, and exceptional performance.
In June 2025, both students officially received their Optical Fibre Installer Certifications.
