CRIME BUSTERS

GA-RANKUWA COMMUNITY’S FAVOURITE PATROLLERS!

Mathews Mpete, Net Nine Nine PR Manager, addresses the community of Thabong about Bloe the Whistle with Tshepo Maphosho, Free State Regional Manager.

Zondi Crime Busters

In a time when safety feels uncertain, Zondi Patrol has emerged as a beacon of hope for the residents of Ga-Rankuwa, north of Tshwane. This community-driven initiative, led by the determined Sibusiso Zondi, offers much-needed peace of mind by tackling crime head-on.

Motivated by rising crime rates reported by the former Minister of Police, Zondi took the bold step of forming Crime Busters-Zondi Patrol. Starting with a group of local youth, the team initially focused on curbing house break-ins and cable theft, issues that had overwhelmed the under-resourced SA Police Service (SAPS). Through their efforts, they not only brought crime under control but also earned the trust and partnership of local organisations, including taxi associations, traffic control departments, and even the government’s Community Safety initiatives.

Going Beyond The Call of Duty

Zondi Patrol specialises in:

• Community patrols (day and night).

• Property and office armed guarding.

• Armed response in emergencies. (Crime busters)

Despite their vital work, the group operates as a non-profit organisation, relying on donations such as bicycles and other essential items from generous community members.

Zondi explains:

“We’ve seen how unemployment drives crime in our township. Around this time of year, we notice an increase in white-collar crimes, particularly targeting stokvels. Often we step in to escort community members during cash withdrawals and ensure their safety. Kidnappings are another rising concern, and we remain vigilant in responding to these threats.”

Zondi Patrol’s success lies in their deep connection with the community. With a team of 120 guards stationed across Ga-Rankuwa and neighbouring areas like Ramogodi, Mmakau, Hebron, and Erasmus, they ensure a rapid response time of 15 minutes or less.

Their strategy includes:

• CCTV surveillance, monitored 24/7.

• Foot patrols, enabling them to track criminals even in difficult fterrain.

• Online reporting, facilitated by vactive WhatsApp and Facebook vgroups with over 310,000 members.

This ground-level presence has made Zondi Patrol a trusted ally in the fight against crime.

Partnership With Net Nine Nine

Net Nine Nine has joined forces with Zondi Patrol, providing critical support as part of its community investment initiatives. Zondi Patrol relies on Net Nine Nine’s reliable fibre network for its CCTV cameras, enhancing their ability to monitor and respond to crime.

Zondi elaborates:

“Our partnership with Net Nine Nine has been a game-changer. Their internet keeps our surveillance systems running, and in turn, we protect their offices and infrastructure. Fibre cable theft is a growing issue, but we’ve successfully apprehended culprits, particularly in Zone 7, where we stopped tampering with underground cables.”

Despite the dangers of confronting armed criminals, Zondi Patrol remains steadfast in its mission.

Zondi reflects:

“This work is risky, but we do it because we care about our community. With the continued support of Net Nine Nine and other partners, we’re confident we can reduce crime and make Ga-Rankuwa a safer place for everyone.”

Zondi Patrol stands as a testament to the power of community-driven action, proving that even in the face of challenges, unity and determination can make a difference.
