Net Nine Nine (Net99) is driving a transformative youth empowerment initiative in Kagiso with its fibre upskilling program for Grade 11 students at Mandisa Shiceka School of Specialisation. Through this program, Net99 offers 210 learners a unique opportunity to develop essential technical skills in the growing telecommunications field, equipping Kagiso’s youth with highly sought-after expertise to empower their futures.

Running from August to November 2024, this youth empowerment initiative provides students with a strong theoretical foundation in fibre technology alongside hands-on practical training. This dual approach is designed to create real career opportunities for Kagiso’s youth by bridging the gap between classroom learning and real-world applications in telecommunications.

In collaboration with Cable Feeder Systems (CFS), the programme introduces students to the fundamentals of fibre technology, exploring what fibre is, its composition, and the complexities of fibre network construction. Students advance their knowledge by learning about fibre manufacturing, the role of fibre optics in modern networks, and the real-life implementation of fibre networks. After an initial assessment, which resulted in an impressive 50% pass rate, students move on to practical training led by KC Pinnacle.

This practical phase allows learners to develop essential technical skills such as splicing fibre joints, stripping and rejoining cables, and performing complete fibre installations. They also gain valuable experience by working on residential fibre installations, which gives them insight into real-world applications of fibre technology in both homes and businesses.

As part of Net99’s commitment to youth empowerment, successful students receive a certificate upon completing the programme, along with eligibility for internship placements with Net99 or KC Pinnacle. This certification and work experience mark a foundational step toward meaningful careers in telecommunications for Kagiso’s youth, empowering them with skills and connections needed for the future.
